What is Summer of Code Idaho?

Looking for a free way to get students, from grades 2-12, excited to learn programming? This is it! Spend the summer helping students work through a Khan Academy introductory programming course. With the help of videos, fun challenges, and projects they will learn programming while creating drawings, animations, and even getting outside. Showcases, badges, and prizes throughout the summer keep coding exciting for everyone - just ask Sal Khan! Here's how the program works:

Become a coach!

If you’re a parent, teacher, or after-school program leader with access to the internet, you have the power to inspire students to give coding a try. With Khan Academy's help, you don’t need to be a programmer to teach programming. With our 1-page guides, FAQs, and separate coach community you’ll have everything you need to get students going over summer. Sign up to become a coach here.

Sign students up

Coaches sign students up to participate in Summer of Code Idaho. Students can go through the course at a library, school, summer program, or even in their own homes. Whether students have previous experience and want to expand their skills, or are completely new to programming, they’ll be able to learn and improve their programming skills through the Khan Academy Intro to JS course.

2-3 hours a week is all it takes

Summer of Code Idaho is a series of online tutorials where students can learn and work on their programming skills at their own pace. To get the most out of the experience we recommend students spend two to three hours programming each week. With 2-3 hours over six weeks, students will learn how to use the JavaScript language and the ProcessingJS library to create fun drawings and animations.

Keep it fun with prizes and project showcases

Students can earn badges for completing challenges, earn prizes, and get their work highlighted in an online showcase. This encouragement keeps the fun and momentum up all summer long.

It’s summer… let’s code.

And best of all, it's free!

Summer of Code Idaho is powered by Khan Academy, a not-for-profit on a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. Summer of Code Idaho is supported by our friends at J.A and Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation.
